Is KPV approved for dogs?

No. KPV is not an approved animal drug and is not a component of any FDA-approved human drug. A patent or an online listing is not an approval.

Has KPV been studied in dogs?

Not that we can find. The published research is in mice, rats and human cell lines, mostly in models of colitis. Those results are a reason for further research, not evidence that KPV is safe or effective in a dog.

The science so far.

KPV is the last three amino acids of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a natural hormone involved in inflammation and pigmentation.
In mice with chemically induced colitis, KPV given by mouth or injection reduced weight loss, gut inflammation and inflammatory markers. A 2008 study also showed KPV enters cells through the PepT1 transporter.
Later rodent work packaged KPV in nanoparticles or hydrogels to reach the colon. These are laboratory formulations, not products you can buy.
In May 2026 FDA staff found no pharmacokinetic, toxicity or human studies of KPV by any route and concluded the evidence weighs against adding it to the compounding bulks list. An advisory committee later voted narrowly to recommend it. That vote is non-binding and FDA has not made a final decision.

Still being studied.

Whether KPV helps dogs with gut disease, skin inflammation or anything else. Chemically induced colitis in mice is not the same as naturally occurring canine disease.
Safety. No acute, repeat-dose, reproductive or cancer safety studies have been published in any species, and the exact molecular target is still debated.
Whether KPV reaches the tissue it is meant to act on. It did not pass easily through human skin in a cell study, and gut studies needed special carriers.
